The world needs people who live well in their places……..
I love this thought. It comes from college professor and
author David Orr’s 1992 book Ecological Literacy: Education and the Transition
to a Postmodern World:
“The plain fact is that the planet does not need more
successful people. But it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers,
restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind. It needs people who live
well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the
fight to make the world habitable and humane.”
We live in a violent world today. There’s conflict
everywhere, brother killing brother, there’s hatred and bloodshed. Our children
are not safe anymore, none of us are safe anymore. Everyday, every hour, we
hear of rape and murder, of bomb blasts and death and destruction.
Sometimes it feels like the world has entered a dark tunnel
and there’s no way out.
But I think there is. I believe the answer lies in living
with more heart.
There’s so much focus on success measured in the
amount of money you earn, the material things you own and the social rank you
attain. We live our lives chasing this definition of success and we are so
consumed by it that the heart has gone missing in the way we live.
With the state that the world is in today, more than ever,
we need to learn a different way to live……to live with more heart rather than
just hard cash.
What the world desperately needs is more lovers rather
than warriors, sharers of love rather than provokers of ugliness and forgivers
rather than revenge seekers.
The world needs people who live well in their places.
I want to be one of those people, I choose to be one of those people........a person
who lives well where I live. A peacemaker, a healer and a
builder.....that is what I choose to be because I believe that is the way out of
the dark tunnel that we find ourselves in today.
